About Troy University

Troy University is a public university in Troy, Alabama. Troy University was on February 26, 1887, when an act of the Alabama Legislature established Troy State Normal School as an institution to train teachers for Alabama’s schools. Joseph Macon Dill was the institution’s first president. In 1893, the school was renamed Troy State Normal College.

The decade of the 1950s also marked the University’s long relationship with the United States Military, as extension courses were offered on nearby bases, first at Fort Rucker, near Dothan, and later at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. A separate Troy State College teaching center was established at Fort Rucker in 1961, which evolved into the present-day Dothan Campus. A similar center, begun at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1965, led to the creation of the present-day Montgomery Campus.

In 1973, the University opened sites at military bases in Florida. Today, TROY Service Centers operate some 20 sites in seven U.S. states, at locations in Japan and South Korea, and partnerships with universities in Vietnam and Malaysia.

In 1967, Gov. Lurleen B. Wallace appointed eight members to the newly established Troy State College Board of Trustees, removing the institution from the control of the State Board of Education. One of the new board’s first acts was to recommend changing the name to Troy State University which became the official new name on December 14, 1967. On April 16, 2004, the Board of Trustees voted to change the name of the institution from Troy State University to Troy University. The transition to the new name was completed in August 2005 and was the fourth in the school’s history.

Today, the university serves the educational needs of students in four Alabama campuses and 60 teaching sites in 17 U.S. states and 11 countries. Troy University has over 100,000 alumni in 50 states of the U.S. and in other countries.

The Trojans competed in the 2003 NCAA Tournament in Nashville against Xavier University after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference title. In 2004, Troy was an NIT participant in a match-up against Niagara University. In 2009, the Trojans finished 3rd place in the Sun Belt Conference and competed in the CBI against College of Charleston. After winning the Sun Belt regular-season title in 2010, the Trojans were invited to play in the NIT once again against Ole Miss.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”VISIT THIS SCHOOLS WEBSITE” color=”success” i_icon_fontawesome=”fas fa-user-graduate” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.troy.edu%2F”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Troy University Location

Troy is located in the East Gulf Coastal Plains region of Alabama. It is located along the Troy Cuesta ridge, which runs across the state from east to west and is the boundary that separates the Chunnenuggee Hills and Southern Red Hills boundaries. Hills and can reach up to 500 feet (150 m) in some areas.  Much of the region consists of pine forests, with mostly pine, hickory, oak, pecan, and poplar trees in the area. The 231-mile-long Conecuh River flows at the northern end of Troy. A 45-acre lake called Pike County Lake is located at the southern end of Troy.

Troy University’s main campus is located near downtown Troy. The campus is situated along rolling hills. The streets throughout the campus are lined with many old oak trees. The John Robert Lewis Hall (formerly the Bibb Graves Hall) and Shackelford Hall are located on this campus. Across from the chapel is a very small lake named ‘Lake Lagoona’ which is the drainage point of the creek that runs through the Trojan Oaks Golf Course.

Troy was selected as the 2010 Corporate Investment and Community Impact Award Winner by Trade and Industry Development, who described Troy as being on the cutting edge of economic development. Troy was also listed as one of “The Top 50 Best College Towns to Live in Forever” by CollegeRanker.com in 2016.

The Trojan Oaks Golf Practice Course, which used to be full-service, 9-hole, 3,211-yard golf course, is one of the top features of the campus with its rolling hills, oak and pine trees, and a creek running through most of the course. Troy was one of only 87 universities in the United States to have operate a full-service golf course on its own campus before closing the course.

Troy’s climate is humid subtropical, typical of areas along the Gulf of Mexico. Troy has hot, humid summers and mild winters. During the summer and fall, Troy is occasionally affected by tropical storms and hurricanes. Thunderstorms occur throughout the summer, but are most severe in the spring and fall, when destructive winds and tornadoes occasionally occur. Late winter sometimes brings very small sleet/snow showers. Significant snow storms are very rare.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
