The University of Alabama Location

The University of Alabama (UA) is a public research university in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It has grown from being a small campus of seven buildings in the wilderness on the main road between Tuscaloosa and Huntsville to a massive 1,970-acre campus in the heart of Tuscaloosa. There are 297 buildings on campus. In 2010, the school added 168 acres to its campus after purchasing the land of Bryce Hospital and has future plans to acquire more land to accommodate their continued enrollment growth.

UA is home to several museums, cultural facilities and historical landmarks.  It is also known as “the Druid City” because of the numerous water oaks planted in its downtown streets since the 1840s. Tuscaloosa has a total area of 70.3 square miles (182 km2). 60.2 square miles (156 km2) is land and 10.1 square miles (26 km2) is water. Most water within the city limits is in Lake Tuscaloosa, which is entirely in the city limits, and the Black Warrior River. Because of its location on the boundary between the Appalachian Highland and the Gulf Coastal Plain, the geography of the area around Tuscaloosa is diverse, varying from heavily forested hills to the northeast to a low-lying, marshy plain to the southwest.

Tuscaloosa experiences a humid subtropical climate. The Gulf of Mexico heavily influences the climate giving the region warm, moist air. During the fall, winter, and spring seasons this interaction of warm, moist air with cooler, drier air from the North along fronts creates rainfall.

Winter lasts from mid-December to late-February. Temperature in January is 44.7 °F (7.1 °C). On average, the low temperature falls to the freezing mark or below on 46 days a year. While rain is abundant (January and February are the wettest months) snowfall is rare, with most years receiving none. Spring usually lasts from late-February to mid-May becoming drier as the season progresses. Summers last from mid-May to mid-September, and the July daily average temperature is 81.7 °F (27.6 °C).
