Huntsville is a city in Madison County, located in the Appalachian region of northern Alabama, with Huntsville being the most populous city in the state. The city’s population was 215,006 at the 2020 census. The city is nicknamed “The Rocket City” for its close association with U.S. space missions. Situated in the Tennessee River valley, Huntsville is partially surrounded by several plateaus and large hills. These plateaus are associated with the Cumberland Plateau, and are locally called “mountains”. Huntsville has a humid subtropical climate.
